Welcome Undergraduate Students!

Our program on Wednesday, October 6th at the 2010 NAE Grand Challenges National Summit focused on how a new generation of engineers – you – can be inspired to move towards developing creative and effective solutions to the NAE Grand Challenges.

The National Academy of Engineering has developed a PDF outlining the 14 areas where engineering solutions are needed: "Grand Challenges for Engineering". This is available online for your review at: http://www.engineeringchallenges.org/?ID=11574

Tomorrow's successful engineer must be flexible, innovative, educated in a variety of disciplines and able to respond quickly to an environment of rapid, technological change. The Summit panel discussions will provide more information on topics related to the Grand Challenges and how to position yourself for a rewarding future career.

Throughout the Summit, students had an opportunity to hear from leading academics, engineers and industry leaders. They were able to network with students from other universities who are pursuing varied disciplines, but who share similar interests.

The Student Day for undergraduate students had a limited number of spaces available and were focused on inspiration. Be the inspiration for others by volunteering to work with junior high school students who were learning about two of the challenges and who will be doing hands-on activities related to those challenges. By volunteering for this activity, students had the opportunity to mentor and help educate these young students as they learned more about engineering as well as the Grand Challenges.

Students also had an opportunity to participate in a poster session of work presented on research conducted around the Grand Challenges.

The afternoon offered students the opportunity to participate in concurrent sessions including a fun, interactive improv session on communication skills, an academic tech bowl competition, hands-on activities related to creating devices for developing nations or participating in interactive demos of cutting-edge technologies in our "Hall of Inspiration". Dr. Chuck Vest, President of the National Academy of Engineering, provided the keynote address to welcome all undergraduate participants just prior to a fun and exciting social networking event to be held at the California Science Center.
